CA, a middle aged Marine engineer from Susses UK was the first patient to undergo bilateral mobile bearing unicondylar knee replacements in India. The surgery was performed by 3 inch long incisions or minimally invasive surgery. Dr.A.K.Venkatachalam Orthopaedic surgeon performed the surgery at a private hospital in Chennai.
The patient has a one year follow up and has retruned to normal activities. Talking to reporters the Doctor said that Partial knee replacements have several advanteage over a total knee replacement.
The first is that it can be performed for people with partial knee arthritis in their fifties itself. It gives good pain relief for fifteen years and subsequently can be revised to a total knee replacement thus extending the prosthetic life to 30 years.
There are immediate advantages also
1) The operation is done through smaller incisions which cause less pain and healing is faster
2)Blood loss is minimal and no transfusions are required.
3)The knee feels more like the normal knee as the unaffected portions of the knee are not replaced.
4) The range of movements and function are like a normal knee
5)Hospitalisation is confined to one or two days only.
6)Costs are obviously less than a full knee replacement surgery.
The patient can return to normal activities much faster after this knee surgery.
Any patient who has knee arthritis restricted to one half of the knee, is not overweight( less than 200 pounds) and has an intact ACL is a suitable candidate for this operation says the surgeon.
