October 02, 2006 - A year ago today the amended Dog Owners Liability Act (DOLA) was enacted in Ontario. The Act bans the breeding and importation of certain breeds and mixed breeds and owners of such dogs must comply with the onerous provisions of the new legislation. The Act focuses on the following types of dogs which it refers to as "pit bulls": "pit bull terrier", Staffordshire Bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, American Pit Bull terrier and any dog that has an appearance and physical characteristics substantially similar to any of those dogs.

The constitutional challenge to overturn the legislation was heard in court on May 15, 16 and 18. The litigants await a ruling and fundraising is ongoing. The Dog Legislation Council of Canada (DLCC) and All For Paws have joined forces and are pleased to announce the launch of the “Talk to the Paw” t-shirt for dogs. The launch of the t-shirt is an effort to remind and educate the public that Bill 132 is still in force and that the DLCC continues to work to have the amendments to the Dog Owners Liability Act overturned. In addition to raising awareness we will be able to provide a means to help with the financial burden. Five dollars from each t-shirt purchase will go towards the legal challenge fund and will be presented to the Dog Legislation Council of Canada.

We could have chosen many sayings for our doggie t-shirts but wanted to ensure that the expression used was upbeat and fun and could be worn by all dogs and not only dogs affected by the Ontario law.

We anticipate significant support for this initiative. T-shirts are available on line at www.allforpaws.ca. Phone orders are also accepted at 1-800-747-7135.

The doggie t-shirts will fit larger dogs, such as Great Danes, Rottweilers, Pit Bulls, Staffordshire Terriers, Boxers, Basset hounds, Available in 3 different sizes, 2X, 3X, and 4X and two colours, pink or navy. These shirts arrive just in time for the cooler weather, allowing dogs and owners to display their support with their “Talk to the ” t-shirt.

We hope that the “Talk to the ” doggie t-shirt will become a recognizable item in the effort to support the fight against breed banning in Ontario and beyond..
Something to raise our Paws about! A pawsitive way to support the challenge!
