Thomas Enqvist Retires Agencies
Thomas Enqvist is retiring from tennis after 19 ATP titles and a Grand Slam final, he told a Swedish newspaper. The 32-year-old Swede said he can no longer take the physical strain of playing.
“It feels sad but unfortunately my body can’t take top level competition anymore,” Enqvist told Svenska Dagbladet.
Enqvist made his professional debut in 1989 and won his first ATP title two years later. He won the Davis Cup with Sweden in 1997 and reached the Australian Open final in 1999. His No. 4 ranking that year was the highest of his career.
Last year, he finished outside the top 100 for the first time since 1991, and is currently ranked 224th.
Enqvist said repeated injuries throughout his career had taken their toll. “I have had a total of six operations, and of course all the injuries have been difficult setbacks, but at the same time I have to try to look a positive side in that I have had a very long career despite the injuries,” Enqvist said.
Enqvist made the decision to quit after an exhibition tournament earlier this year. “I’d manage to get along OK, but I’m not interested in that,” said Enqvist.
